  1. Welcome to another Customer Hotline column. Over the last 5 months Philip
  2. Colmer has been supplying you with information from Acorn`s Customer
  3. Services department. Since becoming Support Information Services Manager
  4. running SID (Acorn's Support Information database), he has lost contact with
  5. the mainstream activities of the Customer Support department and he has
  6. asked me to take on the responsibility of writing this column. My name is
  7. Peter Dunn and I am one of the Software Support Specialists in the Customer
  8. Support department.

  10. * RISC OS tip number 1. When running old-style applications such as Logistix
  11. under RISC OS, you will find that the amount of available memory for the
  12. application is controlled by the NEXT slot under the Task Manager. If you
  13. increase the size of the NEXT slot by dragging it to the right before
  14. running such applications, you will find that the application has more
  15. memory to use. Note that this does not apply to the PC Emulator which has a
  16. new boot sequence on the Support disc.

  18. * RISC OS tip number 2. If you ever used the serial port with Arthur 1.2,
  19. you will know that it was necessary to use a software patch to get reliable
  20. data transfer. Under RISC OS, this patch should not be loaded. Note that
  21. the serial cables you presently use do not have to be modified.

  23. This months application notes cover the View word processor package. The
  24. first application note contains information on how to use extended
  25. highlights with View and additional information on page layouts. The second
  26. application note is a program which will allow you to print labels from a
  27. View macro file. The demand for application notes has been very good over
  28. the last few months and we are pleased that people are finding the notes
  29. interesting.However, we would ask that when writing in for the application
  30. notes you enclosed a A4 SAE. This will ensure our response time for sending
  31. the application notes out is quicker.

  33. We are commonly asked how to get colour output from the Video out ports of
  34. both the Master 128 and BBC Model B and B+. On the BBC Model B the following
  35. modification to the circuit board. 
  36.  
  37. On Issue 1 ,2 & 3 board a 470 picoFarad capacitor should be fitted between
  38. the emitter of Q9 (identified by an "e" next to one leg) and the base of Q7
  39. (the central Leg).

  41. On Issue 4 and later, the capacitor is on board and can be connected simply
  42. by fitting link 39 which may be found next to the modulator in the far right
  43. hand corner of the PCB.
  44.  
  45. On the BBC Model B+ link S26 should be made.
  46.  
  47. On Master 128 issue 1 boards a 470 PicoFarad capacitor should be connector
  48. between the East Leg of R137 and the east leg of R153 which are located
  49. directly to the east of the modulator. Connections should be made on the
  50. component side of the PCB with the leads of the 470 PicoFarad capacitor
  51. being soldered directly to the leads of the two resistors.

  53. On Master 128 issue 2 boards link LK11 should be made.
  54.  
  55. With the release of the Acorn DTP package we have had a number of enquiries
  56. on how to connect up Apple LaserWriters to the Archimedes. Below is a table
  57. of the connections from the Archimedes serial port to the Apple LaserWriter and
  58. how the various setup options should be set within the !PrinterPS
  59. application supplied with RISC OS.
